4 killed in yet another suicide attack on Peshawar police
* 43 injured, mosque, police station badly damaged
PESHAWAR: At least four people were killed and 43 injured when a suicide bomber targeted Badabher police station on Monday.
In the fifth suicide attack in eight days to hit the city, the attacker set off his bomb after being challenged at a checkpost near the police station on Peshawar’s outskirts.
The blast badly damaged the police station, and a nearby mosque and a shop.
“It was a suicide car bombing. The mosque was the worst-hit structure. The police station was also damaged,” Peshawar District Coordination Officer Sahibzada Anis told Reuters.
Senior Superintendent of Police (Operations) Karim Khan told Daily Times that around 250 kilogrammes of explosives were used in the attack, adding that the police station was the apparent target.
Witnesses said a vehicle sped towards the police station and exploded at 7:20am as security personnel, picketed at the rooftop, shot at the explosives-laden vehicle.
NWFP Inspector General of Police Malik Naveed told AFP that three paramilitary personnel deployed outside the police station were wounded.
“A chain barrier was placed to close the road leading to the police station. Three FC snipers were posted there and were injured in the blast,” he said.
“When the bomber broke the chain with his vehicle, one of the snipers fired at him and he was injured. That is why he could not reach close to the police station.” manzoor ali shah/agencies
